Why use saddle flashings (Protecto Joist)
The Situation
The intersection of joists and exterior wall claddings have been a potential water
proofing problem. That was until now! A correctly installed (to specifications) Evadry's
saddle flashing (Protecto Joist)(SF) will give you trouble free watertightness for the life of the building.
Other methods of deck construction include stringer packed off exterior cladding or to construct a deck independent of the structure.
These methods are not without there own problems:- Design restrictions, limitations, and more importantly the over reliance on load
bearing bolts that of course can corrode, leaving your deck a potential death trap in the years to come.
We Cantilever joists from within the structure to take advantage of superior bracing of the host structure and to remove poles and
external braces, whether it be to gain unrestricted access, project over challenging ground levels or aesthetic reasons.
There will always be a need to weather tight intersections of cantilevered joists and cladding, so we must use the most effective product and process available.
Building design benefits
Cantilevering joists is a practible and beneficial means of broadening
architectural scope. There are obvious aesthetic qualities and advantages,
of eliminating poles and bracing (illus. a.). Designers can distribute
loads back through the structure and span further also. This allows decks
to project over steep inclines (illus. b).
Cantilevering joists from within the structure also to project timber sunshades
(illus. c) from above windows without any obvious bracing such as cables to softfit
or 45 degree struts.

Why use Evadry's saddle flashings (Protecto Joist)
With any join, cut, edge or corner in a cladding will have water that penetrates the cladding. (static and cyclic pressure water penetration). It is a role of the saddle flashing as a secondary line of defense to control this moisture and redirect it to the exterior without contacting internal framing timbers. This product must then be able to dry and not suffer detremental adverse effects from dirt and salt left behind. The Evadry saddle flashing is superior in design and material.
